Crime Scene Investigator with 65 Case Errors

An audit conducted by the Houston Forensic Science Center (HFSC) has revealed a crime-scene investigator has made mistakes in over 65 cases since 2015. Officer Justin McGee is a Houston Police officer that worked as a crime-scene investigator for years, especially violent crimes. He’s now been reassigned and been put back on patrol duty until further notice. The District Attorney’s Office is working to rectify the situation by notifying as many attorneys as they can. Managing attorney at Tyler Flood & Associates, Inc., Tyler Flood, speaks out as the President of the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association: “We’re very confident that the current administration of the Harris County DA’s office is on top of this, they are acting quickly, and we are getting notifications.” The event has sparked a debate between HFSC and the Houston Police Department. In 2014, HFSC took over forensic duties and started to manage HPD crime scene investigators. Many HPD officers believe the civilian agency is the cause for the errors and that it’s time to cut ties. Police Union President Ray Hunt stated he believes all crime-scene investigators should be brought back under supervision of the homicide unit. He believes the best option for HPD is to consult HFSC when needed on a case-by-case basis.
