The Houston Police Department is facing another dilemma after a sprinkler mishap has caused nearly 15,000 pieces to be reexamined for water damage. This is just after more than 100 cases were dismissed after evidence was found to be destroyed in Precinct 4. HPD officials are looking into the sprinkler malfunction but hasn’t found any signs of it being intentional. The affected evidence is allegedly not connected to sexual assault cases. The DNA was mostly toxicology kits connected to DWI cases. However, we won’t know the full extent of the damage until HPD overlooks all their evidence. Officials are now attempting to identify the 4,000 cases associated with the possibly damaged evidence. The District Attorney’s Office plans to notify all defense attorneys involved in those cases once they received a full report. Local defense attorneys have raised concerns for their clients by stating this could affect DWI cases from the last ten years. Tyler Flood who is a managing attorney at Tyler Flood & Associates, Inc. stated his opinion on how strange the situation is saying “I was talking to a colleague today, and the question came up: ‘Is there any evidence left in the county?”
