High-Speed Chase Suspect Struck by Police While Handcuffed, Attorney Flood Comments

November 7, 2017

Suspect Mohamed Abu-Shlieba was arrested in the Houston area after leading police on a high-speed chase. The chase wound its way through streets and across highways before the suspect ultimately bailed from the vehicle near a field, where he attempted to evade police on foot. However, the case has not caught the attention of the media and the public for the charges he now faces, but instead for the actions of the police who apprehended him.

A news helicopter was filming closely while he was handcuffed and placed inside a police vehicle. Mohamed appears not to be resisting as he sits down when he is suddenly struck in the face by an officer, who then grabs for his throat. The footage has also been cut after the strike, and it is not known what other behaviors or actions of the law enforcement officer are missing.

Attorney Tyler Flood of Tyler Flood & Associates in Houston was interviewed by KPRC Click2Houston for some insight as to what is going on and what might happen next in this controversial case. Attorney Flood commented that while it does appear to be a clear instance of excessive police force, it does not necessarily change Abu-Shlieba’s defense case. The alleged actions of himself will be weighed in his own criminal defense case or trial, and the apparent act of police brutality by the unnamed officer will need to be weighed in a different set of circumstances altogether. Mr. Abu-Shlieba may have the option to seek restitution later if it is deemed that excessive force was used, regardless of whether or not he is convicted.
